Wajib

Annemarie Jacir

Palestine, 2017, 97 minutes

Father-and-son actors Mohammad and Saleh Bakri are naturals as a revered school teacher and his prodigal son, who wend Nazareth’s narrow streets to pursue the local tradition of hand-delivering wedding invitations. This narrative device takes us into the homes of the Christian Arab middle class, keeping up appearances (and vying for holiday kitsch) amid a pointedly decaying urban infrastructure and encroaching Jewish settlements. Aunties being the same in any culture (even if in their spare time they use social media to provoke the authorities), at each stop father and son are fed and caffeinated, leading to ever more brittle repartee back in the car. Their jabs are priceless, but with sleight of hand the film’s humor gives way to exposure, of how the pressures on Arab Israeli citizens, closely watched by the government, exacerbate normal family tensions. Wajib was selected as Palestine’s entry for the OscarsÒ.—Judy Bloch
