Legends of Et cetera album release show w/Yo No Say & Thunder Club

On Thursday Jan. 12, WTMD is thrilled to host the album release show for "Cardboard City," the second album from Baltimore indie rockers Legends of Et cetera.

Legends of Et cetera is a young indie rock band formed in Baltimore in 2013 and composed of Serena Miller (guitar and vocals), Graham vonBriesen (bass), and Jakob Coburn (drums). As teenagers, they placed second in WTMD's 2015 Baltimore Band Block Party, and are one of only a few bands to perform both a Live Lunch and an Evening With live broadcast at the station. Their sophomore album, "Cardboard City," is set for release on Jan. 6, 2017, Serena's 20th birthday, and the official album release show will follow at WTMD on Jan. 12.

"Cardboard City" opens with the ethereal “Querétaro,” juxtaposing birds, waves, and a “Bladerunner”-esque saxophone alongside lyrics bristling with anxiety over leaving familiar places. (The song was written in contemplation of three band members’ college careers.) The album's title track represents a kind of organized chaos, the lyrics capturing what it’s like to live as a fragile being in a fragile city — “Streets are lit up / outside my window / make room for rainbows / cold nights and echoes / you left me here for somewhere else / I’m beside myself.” The album closes with the powerful “Leather Jacket Art/Pixie Queen,” a song fraught with the worry of being loved and accepted for who we are. The record features the complex time signatures and tight silences which have become hallmarks of the band's sound.

Serena, now 20, studies composition at Peabody Conservatory. Jakob, 19, studies drums at Berklee College of Music. And Graham, 18, is a senior at Towson High.

Opening acts: Yo No Say is an eclectic five piece from the DC/Baltimore area. This quintet varies in style from driving rhythmic choruses to alt rock and R&B-inspired melodies with experimental harmony. Thunder Club is a five-piece indie rock band from Baltimore, Maryland with an energetic sound that blends groove and melody for a unique tone.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. with opening acts Yo No Say and Thunder Club. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 at the door. WTMD is listener supported public radio from Towson University, at 1 Olympic Place in Towson.
