Motor House presents Lit Thursday the third Thursday of each month with engaging literary and writing events that offer more interaction and engagement than a straight reading. On Thursday, Sept. 20, A Revolutionary Summer presents “I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America REMIX.” Young women in A Revolutionary Summer will perform quotes by influential Black women, and then the audience will be encouraged to respond through writing. A Revolutionary Summer (ARS) is an intensive critical reading and writing program dedicated to shifting harmful narratives about Black women and girls through the meaningful study and creation of art and the deliberate application of self-inquiry. For eight Sundays in the summer, up to 20 “daughters” gather to experience and discuss the creative works of consequential Black women artists. They do so under the guidance of authors, community activists, and master teachers. At the end of the program this year, the group performed excerpts from the photo essay collection “I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America,” which they will remix for Motor House’s event. ARS is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. ARS is funded by the Baltimore Children & Youth Fund, the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, Maryland State Arts Council, The Contemporary, and Wal-Mart. Its works has been featured in HuffPost, Baltimore Style, and Red Bull Amaphiko.
